Here at IX Water, we spend a lot of time thinking about….well…..water; how to use it in the most productive ways, how to recycle it, the best ways to dispose of it, and on and on. But with all of this concentration on floods, droughts, water conservation, and awful pollution, we sometimes forget how interesting plain water is. So here’s what I’m thinking about today.

Water is the most abundant molecule on our planet. It is the only substance that comes naturally in three states: solid, gas, and liquid.

Water never actually disappears, which means there’s as much water on Earth today as there was a million years ago. Now, that doesn’t mean that it is where we need it, or that it’s always usable. There are drought stricken areas, arid places, and, as mentioned above, pollution. But the water is still here, just where it’s always been.

That said, the vast majority of water here is undrinkable because it’s salty. And that salty water controls not only Earth’s temperature, but our bodies’ temperatures as well. Water makes up 75% of the human brain – and 75% of each tree. Jellyfish and cucumbers are each 95% water!

Liquid water is heavier than ice, and that’s why ice floats.

More water is used in the bathroom than anywhere else in US households, where we also pay about a penny for every 5 gallons we use.

My husband and I just repaired a toilet that wouldn’t stop running, so imagine how horrified I am to learn that we may have been wasting as much as 200 gallons per day. The good news is that we rarely water our lawn as we have planted a native grass – because the average household with a lawn uses between 50-70% of their water on their grass. All the water used every day in the US totals close to 400 billion gallons.

Water is the GOAT of dissolving. It can break down more stuff than any other liquid, even sulfuric acid!

Water weighs 8 pounds per gallon, just a little less than milk at about 8.6 pounds.
