Exposure to benzene can cause short and long-term health effects, including death. Benzene is prevalent in the “produced water” generated by oil & gas extraction operations. Produced water is by far the largest volume byproduct stream associated with oil & gas exploration and production. About 21 billion barrels of produced water are generated in the U.S. alone each year. (1 barrel = 42 gallons)

Is it safe to go swimming this Summer?
U.S. Centers for Disease Control says no evidence that Covid-19 can be transmitted to people through recreational bodies of water. However, you can still get it from other people while in the pool or at the beach or lake. Social distancing and mask-wearing is still the best bet to avoid catching or spreading the disease.
Another step forward in the fight against water pollution
On Tuesday, the U.S. House passed the William M. Thornberry National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). While most of the bill is not related to water, it DOES include some good regulation regarding PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) pollution generated by the U.S. military.
